The Vineyard

Our Vineyards

Highweald

Overlooked by our Garden Bar and winery, Highweald Vineyard has a benevolent south facing aspect with views of the South Downs.

The soils, originally laid down when Sussex was sub-tropical, are what remains of the ancient Weald-Artois Anticline. This now-eroded dome stretched from south-east England deep into France, and today is topped by the geologically younger chalk ridges forming the North and South Downs on either side.

The silts, sands and clays are residues of sedimentation and fluvial erosion, and they shape the land in a series of imposing ridges and stunning valleys.

Our Vineyards

Lakestreet

Our Lakestreet Vineyard in Mayfield is situated on the southern edge of the Sussex High Weald on its own ridge in the sheltered rain-shadow of Crowborough Hill, the Weald’s highest point.

With panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, our vineyard rolls down the ridge line from 120m above sea level to 85m.

The soils range from clay loam and silty-sandy clay where the Chardonnay is planted, to greensand over clays and sandstones for the Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. We also grow some Pinot Gris here, mostly on the steepest slopes.

Environmental Sustainability

Highweald is a very special place, and we are proud custodians of the land. We take a holistic approach to wine making, respecting the landscape and wildlife that surrounds us, helping to protect it for generations to come.

We are members of Sustainable Wines of Great Britain and go to great lengths to support the land we farm, as well as employing sustainable practices. Since our inception, we have installed bat and bird boxes, built beehives and planted wildflower meadows and nectar strips.

Sustainable Actions

We strive to maintain the highest level of grape and wine quality whilst a) instilling sustainability at the heart of wine production, b) managing vineyards with minimal pesticide and fertiliser inputs, c) reducing water, non-renewable energy consumption and carbon footprint, and d) protecting soils, conserving the environment and promoting biodiversity. The majority of our vineyards are separated by ponds and nature reserves, helping us contribute to our home's natural biodiversity.
